Jungian Cognitive Functions:A Visual Guide to the Eight Functions

Jungian cognitive functions describe characteristic ways the psyche perceives and evaluates experience. Carl Jung began with four functions–sensing, intuition, thinking, and feeling–and described each through an introverted or extraverted attitude.

The familiar function stacks attached to the sixteen personality codes are a later interpretive system built from his model. This guide separates those layers before reconnecting them.

The Eight Cognitive Functions at a Glance

The notation combines a function family with an attitude. The first letter names sensing, intuition, thinking, or feeling. The second letter says whether that function is oriented primarily inward (i) or outward (e).

These are descriptions of attention and judgment, not fixed behaviors. A person using Fe is not necessarily warm, a person using Ti is not necessarily detached, and intuition is not supernatural foresight. The same orientation can produce very different behavior depending on development, context, ability, culture, and the rest of the personality.

What Jung Actually Proposed

In Psychological Types, Jung distinguished two attitudes–introversion and extraversion–and four functions. Sensing and intuition are perceiving functions: they concern how something is registered or apprehended. Thinking and feeling are judging functions: they concern how something is evaluated. Jung called the first pair “irrational” and the second pair “rational,” using those words in a technical sense rather than as praise or criticism.1

Jung then described what happens when a function becomes characteristic under an introverted or extraverted attitude. An introverted thinking type and an extraverted thinking type are therefore not simply two levels of sociability. Their thinking is oriented toward different reference points.

This produces eight principal type descriptions:

  • Extraverted and introverted sensing.
  • Extraverted and introverted intuition.
  • Extraverted and introverted thinking.
  • Extraverted and introverted feeling.

Modern shorthand turns those descriptions into Se, Si, Ne, Ni, Te, Ti, Fe, and Fi. Jung did not present the internet-era eight-function chart or the now-common eight-position “shadow stack” as a finished system. When a contemporary source says “Jung's eight cognitive functions,” it is usually compressing Jung's four functions plus two attitudes into later notation.

Perception and Judgment

One of the cleanest ways to understand the model is to ask two different questions.

How is information perceived?

  • Sensing attends to what is concretely present or has been concretely registered.
  • Intuition attends to possibilities, patterns, implications, and what may be emerging beyond the immediately given.

How is information evaluated?

  • Thinking evaluates through logical relation, definition, consistency, or impersonal criteria.
  • Feeling evaluates worth, fit, importance, acceptance, or rejection.

Jung's use of feeling does not simply mean emotion. Feeling is a judging function because it assigns value. Emotion may accompany that judgment, just as emotion may accompany thinking, sensing, or intuition.

Introversion and Extraversion Change the Function

Introversion and extraversion are often reduced to being quiet or outgoing. That is too narrow for this model. In Jung's typology, the attitude describes the direction of psychological orientation.

  • An extraverted function takes its primary bearings from objects, shared conditions, or the outer situation.
  • An introverted function takes its primary bearings from the subject's inner image, principle, impression, or value.

The attitude changes the character of the function. Te and Ti are not the same thinking process performed at different volumes. Se and Si do not merely indicate adventurous versus cautious sensing. Each pair asks what supplies the governing reference point.

The Four Function Axes

Contemporary type dynamics usually arranges the functions as complementary oppositions. A preferred function brings a corresponding opposite into the same developmental problem.

  • SeNi: immediate sensory actuality and inward pattern or direction.
  • SiNe: subjective sensory continuity and outward possibility.
  • TeFi: externally organized reasoning and inward valuation.
  • TiFe: inward conceptual consistency and relational or shared valuation.

The word axis is useful because neither pole exists in total isolation. Emphasizing one side changes how the other side appears. In a function stack, the dominant and inferior functions commonly form one axis, while the auxiliary and tertiary functions form another.

A Closer Look at the Perceiving Functions

Extraverted Sensing (Se)

Se is oriented toward the concrete object and the conditions of the present environment. It registers what is happening, what has changed, and what can be directly engaged. This does not automatically make someone athletic, impulsive, or thrill-seeking. Those are possible behaviors, not definitions of the function.

Useful contrast: Se foregrounds the actuality of the current situation; Ni foregrounds an inward pattern or direction that the situation evokes.

Introverted Sensing (Si)

Si is sensing shaped by the subject's accumulated impression. Present experience is registered in relation to an inward sense of continuity, familiarity, detail, and what has been concretely known before. Si is often confused with having a good memory or liking routine. Memory may support it, but the core idea is the subjective orientation of sensing.

Useful contrast: Si relates the present to an internal sensory reference; Ne opens the present toward multiple external possibilities.

Extraverted Intuition (Ne)

Ne tracks possibilities latent in objects and situations. It notices connections, alternatives, and openings that are not yet fully realized. It can move rapidly because one possibility suggests another. Ne is not simply creativity or brainstorming; its defining feature is orientation toward emerging possibility in the outer field.

Useful contrast: Ne multiplies possible directions in the situation; Si stabilizes experience through subjective continuity and reference.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)

Ni attends to inward images and patterns through which events acquire direction or symbolic shape. It may condense scattered impressions into a single trajectory or image. Ni is often romanticized as prediction. A better description is pattern-oriented perception whose governing material is inward rather than directly observable.

Useful contrast: Ni follows the inward pattern behind experience; Se returns attention to the concrete actuality of the present.

A Closer Look at the Judging Functions

Extraverted Thinking (Te)

Te organizes judgments around logic that can be stated, tested, coordinated, or applied in an outer system. It asks what arrangement works, what evidence bears on the decision, and how the parts can be ordered. Efficiency can be an expression of Te, but efficiency alone is not the function.

Useful contrast: Te externalizes logical order; Fi holds an inward standard of value and significance.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)

Ti seeks internally coherent explanation. It refines categories, definitions, and principles until the model makes sense on its own terms. It may challenge an accepted procedure when the underlying logic appears inconsistent. Ti is not identical with intelligence or technical skill.

Useful contrast: Ti prioritizes internal conceptual consistency; Fe evaluates fit within interpersonal or shared value conditions.

Extraverted Feeling (Fe)

Fe evaluates in relation to people, shared standards, and the emotional or cultural conditions of a situation. It notices what will affirm, disrupt, harmonize, or communicate value in a relational field. Fe does not guarantee kindness or emotional transparency; it describes the orientation of valuation.

Useful contrast: Fe makes value legible in a shared context; Ti tests the internal coherence of the concepts involved.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)

Fi evaluates according to an inward structure of value. Its judgments may be deeply felt without being immediately displayed or translated into a public rule. Fi is often reduced to authenticity, but authenticity is only one possible expression of a more general inward orientation of valuation.

Useful contrast: Fi protects an inward standard of significance; Te organizes action through externally stated criteria.

From Jung's Types to Function Stacks

Later Myers-Briggs type dynamics organizes a personality code around a dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior process.2 The dominant function describes the most characteristic orientation. The auxiliary provides a balancing mode of perception or judgment. The tertiary and inferior describe less-preferred parts of the same system, although schools of typology disagree about some details–especially the attitude assigned to the tertiary function.

This stack is a model of preference and relation. It should not be read as a measurement showing that a person “has” only four functions, always uses them in a rigid order, or cannot develop outside the pattern.

Jung, MBTI, and Jungstein Are Not the Same Model

Three layers are often blended together online. Keeping them separate makes each one more useful.

Jung's historical model

Jung described attitudes, functions, characteristic types, compensation, and the relation between conscious and less-conscious psychological material. His type descriptions are the historical source of the function vocabulary used here.

Myers-Briggs type dynamics

The Myers-Briggs tradition developed a practical sixteen-type notation and a system of dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior processes. The four-letter code and the familiar stack notation belong to this later layer, not verbatim to Jung's original presentation.

Jungstein's spatial interpretation

Jungstein treats the axes and type codes as positions in a relational field. The Systema Explorer visualizes proximity, opposition, neighboring patterns, and movement rather than presenting sixteen sealed boxes. This is an original interpretive model inspired by Jungian concepts and later type dynamics. It is not a claim that Jung drew the Systema type map or described its geometry.

Conscious and Less-Conscious Functions

Jung's model is dynamic. A highly differentiated function can organize conscious life, while an opposed function remains less developed, less voluntary, or more likely to appear through compensation. The inferior function is therefore not merely the function with the lowest score. It can carry fascination, vulnerability, rigidity, aspiration, and material that does not fit the conscious self-image.

This is one reason cognitive functions are more interesting as relationships than as labels. The question is not only “Which function am I?” It is also: Which orientation do I trust? Which evidence do I dismiss? What kind of judgment feels authoritative? What enters consciousness only under stress, attraction, conflict, or creative work?

Are Cognitive Functions Scientifically Proven?

Cognitive-function language is a theory of psychological preference and interpretation; it is not a map of eight independently verified brain systems. Research on the Myers-Briggs instrument has found relationships with broader trait models while also raising concerns about binary categories, test-retest classification, and claims that extend beyond the evidence.34

That does not make the vocabulary useless. It does set boundaries on what can responsibly be claimed. Cognitive functions can support reflection, comparison, writing, coaching, and hypothesis-building. They should not be used to diagnose mental illness, determine ability, predict compatibility with certainty, or replace clinical assessment.

How to Explore Your Own Pattern

Use function descriptions as competing hypotheses rather than flattering identities.

  • Compare mechanisms, not stereotypes. Ask what supplies the reference point for a judgment or perception.
  • Look across contexts and over time. Work, intimacy, stress, play, and solitude may expose different parts of the pattern.
  • Examine an axis rather than choosing a favorite function in isolation.
  • Treat test results as evidence to investigate, not a verdict.
  • Revisit the distinction between Jung's text, later stack conventions, and any new spatial interpretation.
